That's right, Estee Lauder's little boutique brand M.A.C. Cosmetics' pouty mouth spokesperson Sandra Bernhard is promoting "PlushGlass" by mouthing off and insulting Republican women. Here's the words: "...little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch". Now go see the disgusting, hate-filled internet video advertisement / commercial.
UPDATE: Looks like Estee Lauder and MAC are running scared from us "thin lipped republican bitches" - they edited the video - like it never ever existed- you know it's a Vast Right Wing Conspiracy and all :) BUT and here's the big BUT the Estee Lauder camp hasn't even bothered to issue an apology (UPDATE Aug.17th -see update #7 for apology from Estee Lauder and what actions they have taken with regards to the Bernhard MAC ad.). Really tacky wouldn't you say? - allow your boutique brand M.A.C to insult at least half your consumer base and then just edit the offending ad and then try to slink away. What no apology? Well, I'll just take my dollars to Borghese - they love their customers and wouldn't think to insult them or turn their lovely dollars away.
In an interesting turn of events - commenter Cody at the Cotillion has found the original ad at YouTube go see it before it's taken down!
Some interesting information: Leonard Lauder (Chairman of the Board @ Estee Lauder) served under President Reagan - I bet he would be interested in learning that his little portfolio gem has hired the services of a hate-monger who out and out attacked every single Republican women with her statement "...little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch".
I doubt Estee Lauder would turn down the almighty DOLLAR from a Republican Consumer - and by that same logic I doubt M.A.C. would either but they are definitely working hard to alienate a huge portion of their market by employing the enraged, hateful Sandra Bernhard.
I will be looking for the appropriate contact information and will be posting said info here - I think Estee Lauder needs to show Ms. Bernhard the door, yank the ad and apologize profusely to the consumers Ms. Bernhard has insulted and alienated from the Estee Lauder Brands.
Oh, and just to let you know Estee Lauder has a bevy of boutique brands. They include Bobbie Brown, Prescriptives, Origins, Clinique, Michael Kors, Aveda, Donna Karan and so many others - so go look at the list.

UPDATE#2 : My message to MAC:
As a M.A.C. cosmetics user for several years I was disheartened to hear the new PlushGlass internet ad showcasing your spokesperson Sandra Bernhard ranting the following " “…little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch. I loved MAC because it embodied tolerance and beauty - Ms. Bernhard's hate-filled diatribe does a serious disservice to your mission. I will be copying this message to your parent company Estee Lauder.
I will not purchase another product from MAC or any of the Estee Lauder brands until an apology is issued and Ms. Bernhard is removed as your spokesperson - because she obviously does not espouse tolerance and beauty. Until then I will take my business to a company that truly believes in their values.
UPDATE#3: MAC is getting more exposure for their intolerant spokesperson. Look in the middle column above the Boy George Photo.
UPDATE #4: Contact Estee Lauder and copy them on the message you sent MAC. Just to let you know I added this little tidbit to the Estee Lauder message ( because sometimes the left hand isn't aware of what the right hand is doing):

From: "MAC Consumer Communications"
Dear XXXXXX,
Thank you for taking the time to contact M.A.C.
The Plushglass Sandra Bernhard video on the MAC website has gotten enormous
reaction. Sandra is a provocateur and this is why MAC has worked with her.
In monitoring these reactions- we realized there was one sentence that was
offending some of our customers- which was not what this video was intended
to do. We edited out the one offending sentence out of respect to some of
our customers. The MAC philosophy is about embracing and welcoming
everyone and celebrating difference- ALL RACES, ALL SEXES, ALL AGES is our
credo. "
We appreciate your interest in M.A.C and hope we have the opportunity to
serve you in the near future.
Sincerely,

UPDATE #7 August 17th 2006: Link to Sandra Bernhard MAC ad is removed at MAC online. The video can still be accessed directly via the link but only if you know how to get there.
Estee Lauder sent out an email apology (note I haven't personally received one - but reader Shelly @ chezdiva.com shares her's and one of the Cotillion gals also got the same message: ***diva note : notice the big difference in this apology vs the MAC non-apology.
Dear Ms. North,
We want you to know that we have heard you. As a loyal consumer you took the time to share with us your dissatisfaction regarding the M.A.C.
Plushglass video featuring Sandra Bernhard and we thank you. We have
decided to remove the video from the M.A.C. website.
We apologize for any distress this might have caused you and can assure you that Sandra Bernhard’s political views are not shared by our Company. We
hope that our response allays any question that you may have had regarding
our Company’s intent and commitment to our customers.

UPDATE #8, August 18th 2006: New apology email from MAC (note how it is very similar to the Estee Lauder apology in UPDATE #7 - and a far cry from MAC's original apology in UPDATE #6 - makes one think that the MAC PR guys had a little bit of help in rethinking how to write a true apology and not the ridiculous excuse for the one illustrated in UPDATE 6 above.):
Dear Ms. D,
We want you to know that we have heard you. As a loyal consumer you took
the time to share with us your dissatisfaction regarding the M.A.C.
Plushglass video featuring Sandra Bernhard and we thank you. We have
decided to remove the video from the M.A.C. website.

--I for one am happy that Estee Lauder Inc. did the right thing by removing the offending video and by apologizing to the women who were insulted and alienated by Sandra Bernhard's hate speech in the M.A.C. Cosmetics' "Mouthing Off" ad. Of course I would like to see Sandra Bernhard removed as the PlushGlass spokesperson but only time will tell if she is quietly asked to leave. As for Estee Lauder Inc. I will return to them as a customer and purchase from their many brands - except from MAC since I get the feeling they didn't want to apologize until forced to do so by their parent company, Estee Lauder. One other reason that I will be returning to Estee Lauder Cosmetics now that they have apologized and taken corrective action toward the hateful and offensive MAC internet commercial, is that ELC stands strong and proud by the nation of Israel. Estee Lauder has suffered from arab nations boycotting their products since 2001 because ELC is a friend of Israel - so this Diva will be shopping for a new Estee Lauder lipstick for her not so thin lips :)
UPDATE #8.5 August 18th 2006 : Seem's like there is one little problem yet to be resolved - the link to the video has been removed but the video is still accessible. Here's my reply to the apology e-mail - you might also want to do the same:
Dear Ms. XXXXX,
Thank you for your message. I am happy that Estee Lauder has apologized and taken action to correct the terrible image problem for Estee Lauder created by Ms. Bernhard's hate-filled M.A.C. Cosmetics internet commercial assault on Republican women.
Thank you for removing the link to the video on the M.A.C. website navigation panel however the video is still accessible directly at: http://www.maccosmetics.com/whats_new/plushglass_video.tmpl - leaving that up would give the impression that the problem hasn't been corrected. Perhaps that URL should be redirected to the M.A.C. homepage or better yet to a page with an apology as worded below - I am sure that would be appreciated by your Republican consumer base.
Best regards, CD
Thank you for all this information on this. It was completely unncesssary to say what Ms. Bernhard said. It came out of pure hate.
Posted by: Wild Thing at August 15, 2006 04:02 PMFrom the above "list" link look at Citizenship, commitment, and priciples. The type of advertising Lauder is using with Sandra Bernhard opposes almost every prnciple listed. Are they serious about their commitment to citizenship or is it just lip service? This ad is hurting the image they are trying to project.

Sure, except for the ethnic slur.

But, speaking from experience as a former Democrat, Republican women are the hottest BY FAR. Trust me. I've been to both sides political events and the GOP babes are WAAAY better to be around. :D

Posted by: Fen at August 16, 2006 03:18 AM"the services of a hate-monger who out and out attacked every single Republican women with her statement '...little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch'"
How does that attack "every single Republican woman?" That was just one descriptive word in the whole rant. I don't think Sandra was implying that all Republican women are by definition thin-lipped, or frightened, or little, or a bitch, or freaked out, or even right-wing. She was outlining a very specific sort of woman, which required a lot of descriptive words beyond Republican. Otherwise, she would have just said Republican.
You have to have a really thin skin not to see that.
Posted by: aplomb at August 16, 2006 03:24 AMWell... I don't buy the stuff, and I've made sure my wife won't. I sent the following...
Well - guess you don't want any of my money... I'll make sure my wife and a host of others do not spend any more money on your products.
That BIG freaked out, intimidating, REPULSIVE, LEFT-wing DEMOCRAT FAT-lipped bitch cinched it for me - and 95% of the friends I've shown the ad to.
Keep politics out of your ads, apologize and offer Republican affiliated voters 25% off on the product for a month - and you ~might~ stave off catastrophic consequences... but, I doubt even that will save you.

Posted by: Kathi at August 16, 2006 06:46 AMIt's almost funny to see the lib Dims come out in support of intolerant, race-baiting, culture demeaning, ethnic slurs. At least they are not bothered by that hobgoblin of consistency with their hypocrisy.
They've always held that hatred is ok, for those who don't blame America first and who are proud to be Americans and who will defend the freedom and peace for the whiney assclowns who would abuse the same. Their idea of freedom is to suppress those with differing beliefs, such as their idea of supporting the troops is to have them surrender in Vietnam and Iraq.
They are soooo predictible. And they wonder why they always suck in the one poll that counts - the elections.

Posted by: Ruth at August 16, 2006 09:07 AMWow, I'll never buy MAC products again. The Republican comment of course is offensive; but I had no idea they were marketing to bitter, old hippy bags. I cannot relate. "These lips are from the '60s." Who cares? Will this era ever stop wimpering and just go quietly off into the woods and die?

Liberal men don't have them, so the women need them I guess?
The great thing about this ad is that it took me to your site for the first time! Great site, I'll be back!
Posted by: LayLo at August 16, 2006 09:24 AMYes, sure. Boycott Estee Lauder.
That's exactly what pro-terrorists would want. Estee Lauder has been the victim of an Arab boycott for years.
Their ad was stupid, they have now corrected it. That's not a cover up, it's a smart response which should be applauded not sneered.
I would urge you to save your outrage for more worthy causes and reconsider your position on this one.
Posted by: Dan at August 16, 2006 09:27 AMHere's the letter I sent. I guess I should be used to this kind of thing by now, but for some reason this really got me angry.
Imagine if the situation had been reversed - " ...left-wing Democrat thick-lipped bitch" is about as directly opposite as I can make it. Used in a marketing piece. For a division of a big, publicly-traded company. The outrage would be huge, and justifed IMHO.
Anyway, I'm sure our liberal elite "betters" are getting a big laugh out of all of this over there at the trendy M•A•C marketing department. I'm sure this only reinforces their sense of superiority, but I'm sick of their attitude towards people like me.
I vote Republican and I vote with my wallet too.

Attn M•A•C Corporate Leadership:
I have been a loyal M•A•C customer for many years. I've spent thousands, probably tens of thousands, of dollars on M•A•C cosmetics. Now I feel mighty stupid for having done so.
I will never spend a single penny on any of your products again.
You can thank your marketing people and spokesmodel Sandra Bernhard for that.
I suppose I am what your company regards as a "…little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch" even though I am none of those, except a Republican voter.
Thanks for letting me know what you really think of me although I'm now certain you're not at all interested in what I think of you.
There's a lot of competition in the fashion & beauty industry. Yours will get my money from now on. I'm sending this message to Estée Lauder as well, and will be happy to avoid not only the M•A•C brand but all of the brands listed below.

To whom it may concern:
In regard to this "ad" which has shown up on your website, I would like an immediate apology or retraction of this ad or I will be compelled to take my business elsewhere.
I have been a user of MAC cosmetics for many years. I have also spent many thousands of dollars on your sister brand La Mer. I have been invited to and have participated in trunk shows at my local Neiman Marcus (Short Hills, NJ) when new product lines debut. I am disgusted that one of your spokespeople has been allowed to politicize your brand and make obscene and derogatory remarks as part of an advertising ploy. I trust that you will make this right; pull this ad and issue an apology to your customers. Thank you for your kind attention and anticipated courtesies with regard to the above.
Very Truly Yours,
"msintheforest", Esq.
You know what? Let's not let them get away with something like this for once.
Of course it's not the biggest issue in the world. But it's somehow so personal when a company whose products I use every day decides that it's in their best interests to insult me for no apparent reason.
Write a letter. Can't we be free of the political Left's hatred and vitriol at the makeup counter, at least?
Posted by: Cody at August 16, 2006 01:26 PMCody,
You are absolutely correct - they shouldn't slink away from this one. And even if it is a small issue in the grand scheme of life - it's still important. The small things culminate into the larger issues and in this case - it's the rabid hatred of all things conservative by both the elitist hollywood and leftist crowds. I for one have had enough of being bashed by them and specially through a company at which I spend hundreds of dollars annually.
Posted by: diva at August 16, 2006 01:48 PMI think this has angered me so much not in spite of its triviality, but because of it.
I'm not upset that Sandra Bernhard says such things. Free country and all that. But a major national cosmetic brand embracing it as their public image? The subtext of this message: Shut up and do as we say, Republican bitch, or we'll mercilessly hound you everywhere no matter how unrelated or inappropriate.
Nothing, it seems, is out of bounds anymore.
Posted by: Cody at August 16, 2006 02:27 PMJust found your site. Beautiful! Will come back to visit again. I am also an avid makeup buyer. I adore makeup. My main makeup of choice is Liz Arden [hey they have Catherine Zeta-Jones!] -- I would never buy makeup to look like Sandra bernhard -- eew! and certainly a company that sells products to women should never refer to us as b*tches, I dont care what your political stance is. I've already emailed MAC and Estee Lauder. I will certainly be telling every female I know..and as a bartender.. I will also tell all my cutomers. I am outraged and no matter what solution they come up w/will never buy their makeup. In fact going home to throw away any of their products I've bought in the past.
--There are plently of makeup companies out there w/out buying from one w/such mean spiritedness.
Am I the only one here who saw the video and thought, "This would have made an incredible MST3K short"? I mean, her facial contortions are so awful, they undermine the whole point of the commercial, and as a result I can't even get annoyed when she makes that comment about some timid frightened right-wing Republican thin-lipped b*tch -- her whole face-scrunching thing, and the strange shapes her mouth forms as she goes through her little speech about the 1960s and eating a Belgian waffle in New York City and throwing you onto a bed and ravishing you, make her look so freaky and unattractive. It's like watching somebody with six missing teeth and one eye an inch higher than the other one, striding into the room with absurdly overblown confidence, thinking she's drop-dead gorgeous and bellowing at your female friends to eat their plain-Jane hearts out.
I would dearly love to have seen what Mike, Crow, and Tom Servo might have done with this. I can't BELIEVE the company thought this performance would sell makeup. Unless the company is gambling that scrunching up your face and thrusting out your all-too-noticeable fish lips while you're talking is going to be the next "in" thing among the nation's Bush Derangement Syndrome set.

Posted by: diva at August 17, 2006 09:57 AMWow....don't any of you have anything more important to argue about? It's makeup for goodness sake. If youre a republican...so what. get over it. People are judged and slurred at each day whether theyre black, white, fat, skinny, republican, or democrat, and yes its tasteless and rude but what isnt tasteless and rude these days in our society? This is a commercial. We are consumers. Consumers have a certain amount of clout. I don't think that the parent company was even aware of that sentence in the commercial, and we brought it to their attentions.
And we do worry about a lot of things more important than this issue, but you know, words are important. They have meaning, and if you allow someone to call you a thin lipped bitch and you don't stand up to them, well, they will call you worse tomorrow!

I am a 63 year old male, who has always bought Estee Lauder products as gifts for any number of women I have met in my lifetime. As recently as two weeks ago. A young 19 year old woman that I work with has never used lip stick. I arranged for a sales lady to help her pick out a color of lipstick and any fragrance she chose.
I can assure you that I will never do this again. I will find another manufacturer to but from.
These are my sentiments as well;
" I will not purchase another product from MAC or any of the Estee Lauder brands until an apology is issued and Ms. Bernhard is removed as your spokesperson - because she obviously does not espouse tolerance and beauty. Until then I will take my business to a company that truly believes in their values."

Hey JarJar... as has been pointed out our men have "the pair".. we aren't required to buy anything from a company as stupid as Estee Lauder has now proved themselves.
I haven't seen anyone nearly as hateful as you.. so if you are liberalism at its best.. it isn't doing so well..
And I challenge you to grow a few brain cells and look up the idea of censor vs censure, and realize that if you are stupid enough to use your freedom in speech in a way that someone else doesn't like they aren't required to buy movie tickets, concert tickets or recordings or make up.
We just don't have to.. so if your really wierd advice of "growing a pair" to women still stands, I am going to point out. .we have.. by speaking out.. making a noise and refusing to buy something from someone that doesnn't give a hoot about us or our feelings. We aren't forced to be sheeple like your side of the aisle.
Get a grip darling.

It is obviously she who has the problem she which she deems necessary to share with the world.
Saraphina, I have to agree with you. Sandra's lip contortions had a life all their own.
They stumble all over her face like those of a drunken schizophrenic clown.
TUI? {Talking Under the Influence}
There’s no question, hence her need to over emphasis her “soliloquy”.
Some may think its only makeup…uh ya.
However, do you really think it’s makeup that is the problem here?
What is taught to children all around the world in various family incomes and many religious sectors? We teach that name-calling is not the way to handle anything.
This is hate dispersed flippantly.
We should not blow this off, as “It’s just Sandra and her mouth again”.
Even Howard Sterns’ over the top, in your face, adolescent without taste style has become Passé’. {Out-dated, whack, tired, etc}
MAC had a choice to make prior to airing this and it was obviously not.
It wasn’t that long ago we as women were not allowed to vote.
We still do not have an equal income to a man in the same position.
We are not treated equally in many countries.
Try to purchase a car without a man and watch the sales man speak to you as if you are an elementary school child.
Why would a makeup company geared to a large percentage of women, and whom is trying to promote a product with an edge, call any of its potential clients names?
They chose political fence playing and Whoops fell off the edge.
Now these actions will force them to suffer some consequences.
Glad I bumped into your site.
Good grief.
Ann Coulter can go on for years about liberals and democrats and not one of you have a thing to say. Sandra Berhnard says boo and you all get the vapors.
Looks like you have some pretty thin skin to go along with those thin lips.
Like all bullies, conservatives can dish it out but they sure can't take it.
Posted by: Jimbo2K6 at August 24, 2006 01:18 PMJimbo just because we're conservatives it doesn't mean that we walk in lockstep with Ann Coulter. I've disagreed with her loudly and publicly on many things. Not every conservative believes that bomb throwing invective is the best way to make a point.
However it looks as though you feel the need to resort to insults and name calling to make your points. Maybe you should reconsider your criticism of Coulter's style since you seem to be happy to imitate it.
Posted by: Janette at August 24, 2006 11:19 PMAnd like a liberal robot, Jimbo2K6 breaks out the inevitable Tu Quoque argument - "oh yeah? Well you guys are mean tooooo!"
Note to libs: that doesn't make you look any better, just pettier.
Posted by: Fatmouse at August 25, 2006 11:56 AMI'm sorry - what company hired Ann Coulter to sell a product? Oh, right... There isn't one.
Posted by: MelG at August 26, 2006 12:44 AMHey CODY,
I just ran into your blog/archive about the MAC-SB ad campaign. I have been preparing a short essay with the intention of sending out to 50 fashion/women's magazines. And although I harbor little hope that it will get published, the article's main thrust is to voice the erroneous profile of the conservative woman and dispel some of their stereotyping. This ad and the reaction to it is timely indeed for my research.
Personally, I'm continuously frustrated with the rhetoric, approach and messages that are conveyed in these magazines that I have also stopped purchasing them. So, for those of you libs who think we're just whinning, who gives!!! My dollars are as good as yours and I expect the same respect and consideration you should grant any human being independent of gender, color, or political affiliation. It irks me to realize that my preciously earned dollars have gone to pay this ....contorted, unattractive has been actress/comedian? just so she can insult/demean and reveal her yet ugliest side.
I am a full lipped, latin-asian-caucasian whirlwind, energetic and outspoken, proud of the job I'm doing raising four kids, with a solid 3 digit IQ, trained as an Architect, with 2 masters, working from home and very happily married. I love fashion/beauty products and my voice is not SB's voice. I'm also conservative to the bone in principles, morality and political affiliation. I don't give it a rat's bottom if SB feels this way, I do care if she's used as a spokesperson in an important company which is competing for a slice of a billion dollar slice of pie (Beauty products). So let me protest in piece, I'm protesting lack of respect. At least I (and my fellow "ladies in RED") don't go around writing about our vaginas or giving more value to a terrorist's life than a child from our womb!
All I need...is a little respect....Famous words, right Tina?
(I know I sound pretty P O'd but I did get a bunch of good laughs reviewing everyone's postings.)

Addendum:
Before any one gets on my case, I wrote piece when I meant PEACE....ooops.

Posted by: Last Samurai at August 28, 2006 03:02 PMI consider myself a moderate Republican. I voted for a Democrat for senator because the Republican running in the last election was so far to the right that I found him scary.
What bothers me about many, not all, of the above blog comments is the name-calling. Despite the actual problem being stated with name-calling of Republican women by a spokesperson for a cosmetic company that is what I am seeing on this blog.
I just e-mailed Kenneth Cole (a company that sells handbags and shoes) for an ad run in the September 2006 issue of Vogue magazine on pages 210-211. It reads, With the government recording personal phone calls, our rights aren't the only thing on the line. Are you putting us on? - Kenneth Cole.
I had just purchased a Kenneth Cole handbag about six weeks ago and loved it. The ad made the connection of carrrying the bag and a political statement. I will not ever purchase another Kenneth Cole product. The company can't come back from this for me. I thought all that ads were supposed to do is to sell a brand. Silly me, I thought companies were in business to make a profit.
I hope that Kenneth Cole's ads make Democrat women more likely to purchase its products than it does make Republican women less likely to purchase them. Political statements need to be kept out of marketing. Think Dixie Chicks.
